Humans have expanded their ego in ways such as understanding the self through the humanities, understanding nature through science, and increasing productivity through technologies.

Chemical engineering started as process engineering on how to design processes based on chemical reactions. Chemical industry, which had already sprouted during the first Industrial Revolution, was combined with machinery during the second Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century to enter the mass production system. This situation gave birth to chemical engineering.

With petrochemical industry developed in the early and mid-20th century, chemical engineering secured an important industrial position and was equipped with an academic system. Since then, chemical engineering has expanded its scope from classical chemical processes represented by liquid processes for producing organic compounds to systems relevant to polymers, inorganic and biological compounds and something more.

Chemical engineers use basic principles of chemical transformation and physical change of substances to design highly productive processes and create new applications by using physicochemical properties of substances. By doing this kind of work, chemical engineers now go beyond engineering and conduct research that falls into a more fundamental science category. We, chemical engineers, investigate the causes of
phenomena, study reaction mechanisms, and improve material properties by changing the composition and structure of substances.

From the second half of the 20th century, Homo sapiens began to become aware of the aftereffects of the increased productivity resulting from technological development. The question of whether humankind can survive, let alone sustainable economic growth, became an opportunity for chemical engineering to step out of its way to address environmental and energy issues.

We, the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering at UNIST, are at the forefront of the evolution of chemical engineering by presenting:
Cutting-edge technologies leading progress of modern society,
Productive processes that does not sacrifice the quality of human life,
Carbon-neutral technologies to heal the environmental wounds of the earth, and
Energy technologies to ensure the sustainability of mankind.
We believe that our achievements and potential are significantly recognized worldwide.

With the motto of “Research-driven Sustainability for Global Sustainability,” our faculty of the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering is composed of experts with a wide spectrum of disciplines including chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, chemistry, and physics.
